What is LifeShield?
The LifeShield thermal regulation device is a unique electronic circuit integrated into the LED engine to prevent the LEDs from overheating. As the luminaire encounters adverse environmental ambient temperatures causing the LED solder point temperature to rise above the factory-set limit, the device will reduce the luminaire’s power consumption through its interface with the drivers. As a result the luminaire is restricted to a temperature safe for long-term lumen maintenance of its LEDs.
Application of LifeShield circuits in LED Luminaires:
Ambient temperatures that outdoor luminaires operate in vary widely because of geographic and climatic variations. Because of this, operation of an LED luminaire is subjected to a very wide range of ambient temperatures. This range may create conditions where the LED’s themselves are operating at temperatures in excess of their max rated temperature limit for optimum life. Beacon Products has developed a circuit that employs the latest LifeShield technology to control the current that powers the LED itself. By monitoring the actual operating temperature, the LifeShield circuit will control the actual current to the LED and reduce that current sufficiently to insure that the max operating temperature of the LED is not exceeded, thereby ensuring, actually guaranteeing, that the maximum life of the LED will be realized.
LifeShield is a serial (digital) output temperature sensors which offer excellent temperature accuracy (±0.5°C, typical) with a very low operating current. LifeShield is normally used for over-temperature shutdown purposes. These sensors are nonlinear and feature very fast temperature conversion times, with temperature resolution ranging from 0.0625°C to 1°C.
